Spooky games to get you in the Halloween spirit!
With Halloween fast approaching, it’s time to get ready for a fright, and who says you can’t do that in the comfort of your own home?
This is a curated list of horror games I’ve found myself enjoying along with those that gave me the biggest body chills.
These games contain mature themes that may include violence against humans or animals, gore, physical and psychological abuse, flashing imagery, distributing imagery, mentions of sexual assault, loud noises and jumpscares.
Dead Plate
“Dead Plate” is a visual novel point-and-click role-playing game (RPG). Set in 1960s France, users play as Rody, a young man who works at a high-end restaurant run by a chef named Vince. This day by day format has players saving up enough money by the end of the week – for what? Who knows?
Married in Red
“Married in Red” is a visual novel point-and-click RPG. Set in South Korea, users play as Bok-su Go – a woman who is going to her old friend from university, Da-jeong Choi’s wedding.
Do NOT Take This Cat Home
“Do NOT Take This Cat Home” is a visual novel where players adopt a kitten found on a day out and the various shenanigans the two get into – or players could also just walk away.
The Crooked Man
“The Crooked Man” is the first title in the “Strange Man” series. Users play as David Hoover, a young man who recently moved into a new apartment. He soon realizes that there’s something very wrong about his new apartment when he begins to hear strange noises.
Buckshot Roulette
“Buckshot Roulette” is a take on the well-known game of Russian roulette. The turn-based game takes place in an underground nightclub, where players compete against a mysterious dealer in a round of life or death.
Iron lung
“Iron Lung” is a simulation game where users play as a convict who was sent on a mission to explore an isolated moon covered in an ocean of blood while in an old rusty submarine. Players are promised freedom if they complete the mission.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
“I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” is a 1995 point-and-click horror-adventure game based on the short story with the same title by Harlan Ellison. A powerful supercomputer, AM, ends up taking over the world, destroying all of humanity except for five humans, who AM endlessly tortures.
Look Outside
“Look Outside” is a survival RPG that takes place in a four-story apartment building. A mysterious phenomenon has occurred, causing people who look outside to turn into violent monsters. Users play as Sam and try their best to find out what is happening and why.
Detention
“Detention” is a 2D atmospheric horror side-scroller set in the ‘60s during the White Terror period when Taiwan was under martial law. Users play as two high school students who find themselves trapped within their school, which is now overrun with monsters, after waking up from a nap.
Ib
“Ib” is an RPG adventure game where users play as a little girl named Ib, who, after visiting an art gallery with her parents, finds herself trapped and alone within the gallery itself.
Mouthwashing
“Mouthwashing” is a 3D story-based game. The game takes place on a spaceship named The Tulpar, which has suffered a horrific crash. The crew becomes stranded with the captain, Curly, out of commission. It’s up to Jimmy, as Co-pilot, to hold down the fort until they can be rescued.
The Witch’s House
“The Witch’s House” is a survival puzzle game where users play as Viola, a young girl who finds herself trapped in the forest. She explores a nearby house to find an escape, only to fall into the trap of the witch who lives there.
No I’m not human
“No I’m not Human” is a visual novel that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after global warming. As a result, humans have become nocturnal as the sun now makes it impossible to go outside. Recently, creatures known as “Visitors” have appeared, and it’s up to players to figure out who is human and who is not.
Fran Bow
“Fran Bow” is an adventure game where users play as a little girl named Fran who struggles with a mental illness due to witnessing her parents’ death. She finds herself in a mental institution. However, during her stay, she begins having dreams about her missing cat and decides to escape the institution to find him.
Omori
“Omori” is an RPG about a young boy who chooses to escape into his mind, avoiding the outside world. He can either choose to stay a hikikomori or face the real world and his repressed memories.
Little nightmares
“Little Nightmares” is the first installment of the “Little Nightmares” series. The game is a 3D platformer where users play as a little girl named Six. Six finds herself among The Maw, along with distorted adults, where she needs to find an escape before she is found.
The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series
“The Telltale Definitive Series” takes place within the comics of “The Walking Dead” universe written by Robert Kirkman. The game is a story-based point-and-click game with quick-time events. Over the course of four games, users play as different characters as they try their best to survive in the post-zombie apocalypse.
Silent Hill F
“Silent Hill F” is a recent spinoff of the notable horror game series “Silent Hill.” Taking place in 1960s Japan, users play as Shimizu Hinako, a young girl whose hometown of Ebisugaoka has recently been engulfed in fog. Hinako must traverse her hometown to find out what’s going on and do her best to survive.
