Knight Places Second in Hammer Throw at USA Track & Field Championships
CSUN Track & Field’s Trey Knight rallied to earn silver in the hammer throw at the 2025 Toyota USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships, July 31 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Knight qualified for the world championships with a personal-best throw on his final attempt of the competition.
A senior and native of Ridgefield, Wash., Knight launched a new personal record (PR) of 78.76 meters (258-5), which vaulted him into second place in the event. Rudy Winkler, a three-time Olympian, won the event with a toss of 81.47 meters (267-3).
Knight fouled on his first two attempts, before his third attempt soared for 74.56 meters (244-7) to place eighth — and qualify for the final round. His fourth attempt of 75.29 meters (247-0) moved him into sixth place, and he clinched the PR on his final attempt. His previous PR was 78.15, set on June 15 at the Portland Track Festival.
Knight surpassed the world championship qualifying standard of 77.50, earning him a spot on the world championship team. The 2025 World Athletics Championships are scheduled for Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo, Japan.
In two seasons with CSUN, Knight won two Big West hammer throw titles and established a school record of 77.91 (255-7) this past March at the Trojan Invitational. He previously was a First-Team All-American in the hammer throw after placing sixth at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Knight competed at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials as well, taking ninth overall.
Knight was also named NCAA West Region Field Athlete of the Year in 2025, following a runner-up performance in the weight throw at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships. He holds the CSUN school record in the weight throw with a toss of 24.87 meters (81-7.25), set at the Nevada Invitational.
“It’s been a rocky journey on the road to Tokyo but today made it all worth while,” said CSUN assistant coach Dan Lange. “I couldn’t be more proud of Trey for having the strength and courage it took to make this happen — none of which would have been possible without the love and support from coach (Justin) Johnson and rest of the CSUN staff.”
