Help CSUN Students Scuba Dive for Science
The acclaimed CSUN Marine Biology program is raising funds so CSUN students can undergo required training before they explore the ocean depths.
Training in scientific diving is an OSHA requirement for students and professionals wishing to work for science underwater. While the CSU offers AAUS scientific diving training to students, few students had the chance to start diving at an early age to meet the pre-requisites for the course. For many students, the costs involved in gaining prior experience and diving certifications, as well as the cost of gear, are barriers to entry.
The CSU offers a two-week scientific diving course based on standards set by the American Academy of Underwater Sciences, teaching students how to how to safely work underwater, including risk management and rescue techniques.
A CSUN funder for the scientific diving course is underway to cover student gear and other costs of prerequisite experience.
CSUN’s marine biology program is world-renowned, with students spending a semester studying at Santa Catalina Island and research trips exploring coral reefs and global warming in the Virgin Islands and Mo’orea, French Polynesia. Undergraduate and master’s classes take full advantage of CSUN’s proximity to California’s environmental diversity, with frequent field trips for diving to take samples and data and observe marine life in their natural habitats.
