Bundle up this fall with affordable indie games
Autumn is officially here, bringing sweater weather and the perfect excuse to curl up with a warm drink and a cozy game.
Although many gamers enjoy the usual cozy simulators such as Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, several independent game developers have created unique, warm and relaxing games that deserve recognition as well. I’ve curated a short list of relaxing and comfy games that I enjoy playing in the fall, all under $20.
Cat Cafe Manager – $19.99
In this simulation and strategy game, players rebuild their grandmother’s cat cafe in the village of Caterwaul Way. Players can interact with six different kinds of townspeople: artists who pay in jewels, businesspeople who pay in gold, fisherfolk who pay in fish, punks who pay in materials, vagabonds who pay in fabric and witches who pay in nectar. Each form of currency is useful for obtaining different kinds of upgrades, such as pet goods, furniture, recipes and ingredients. Feline fans would be a great candidate for this game.
Night in the Woods – $19.99
In this story-rich adventure game, Mae Borowski, a dark blue anthropomorphic cat, returns home to Possum Springs after dropping out of college. This is a narrative game focused on exploration and creating relationships with different characters. There are two main endings with infinite replay-ability. For enjoyers of platformers and visual novels, this game offers a unique combination of both.
Littlewood – $14.99
A city builder and life simulation game where the main character defeated the Dark Wizard and is praised as the hero of the world of Solemn. In this game, players rebuild the world by progressing through exploration, collecting and harvesting different materials and items to fulfill the townspeople’s requests. Littlewood is very similar to Stardew Valley in aesthetics and some gameplay; however, it has a much different storyline. Unlike Stardew Valley, the length of days in this game is determined by the player’s stamina, rather than a consistent cycle. The art style is also slightly reminiscent of classic Pokémon games.
Galaxy Burger – $11.99
Keeping with the cat theme, Galaxy Burger is a cooking simulation game where players serve burgers to aliens and mecha cats. The game is designed to be stress-free by eliminating a time limit, encouraging a relaxing gaming session. As players progress, they can unlock more recipes and travel to other planets. It has a nostalgic feel that reminds me of the Papa’s Games series. There’s a solo mode or multiplayer with up to seven people.
A Short Hike – $7.99
Arguably the most relaxing game on this list, A Short Hike is exactly that–a hike! This game focuses on independent exploration rather than giving players a set path to complete. Players can complete quests, meet quirky characters, collect items, and engage in activities such as fishing or swimming. There are no timers or competitive aspects, so players are free to explore completely at their own pace. The ultimate objective is to reach the top of the mountain to get cell reception. However, players will encounter an unexpectedly emotional story along the way.
Whether you enjoy simulation games or prefer slow story-driven adventures, reeling in the season with a charming indie game is a fun way to get into the fall spirit.
