CSUN Safe App Puts Peace of Mind in Your Pocket

A new safety measure is in place at CSUN—available to all students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus. The CSUN Safe App, which launched this month, provides a variety of features designed to enhance personal security and give immediate access to emergency resources, all on one screen.

Nelson Cox, director of Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity with CSUN’s Department of Police Services, leads the CSUN Safe App project and is conducting a series of trainings to groups and departments on campus.

“[Police] dispatch is [now] as close as your pocket or your hand,” he said. “Now with this app, it will be much easier for everyone to be able to have additional layers of safety, so that you can get to where you’re going safely on campus,” he noted.

The app’s features include one-button access to text 9-1-1 and the “Mobile BlueLight” feature, which refers to the emergency blue lights on campus, where emergency calls can be made. The “Mobile BlueLight” selection gives users on campus direct contact to Police Services’ emergency dispatchers, and automatically shares the location—provided that geolocation access is shared on users’ phones.

There is also a “Friend Walk” option that Cox explained in a recent staff training session at the Klotz Student Health Center.

“This is a wonderful feature because if you aren’t able to get Matador Patrol for some reason to accompany you to a car, you can send your location to a friend,” Cox said. “They can follow you along your path to your car, to the next building, through our campus buildings.”

In addition, a “Panic” selection can notify your friend and start an emergency call.

The app was developed and is managed by AppArmor, which is also the company behind CSUN’s campus-wide emergency notification system. State funding supported implementation of the new app.

In addition to emergency assistance, there are a variety of helpful resources in the app, including easy access to the following:

  • “WeTip”: anonymously report criminal activity either online or over the phone.
  • Campus Maps and Transportation: navigation support with building locations, housing and Metrolink shuttle routes.
  • Emergency Procedures: simple, step-by-step directions on what to do in emergency situations, such as an earthquake, fire, hazardous spills or active threat.
  • Campus Health Care Providers: including the Student Health Center and University Counseling Services

Look for flyers and posters on campus to access a QR code—the CSUN Safe App is available to download on Apple’s App Store or Google Play.
