Canvas among victims of Amazon Web Services outage
Just after midnight on Monday, Amazon Web Services (AWS), a key provider of cloud infrastructure, began noting “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services.” Among the websites experiencing errors were Instructure, the publisher of Canvas, leaving students unable to access assignments, classes and class information.
In addition to Canvas, errors have been reported on hundreds of websites, including various news outlets, airline websites, social networking sites and more, according to Downdetector.
Downdetector is a website that tracks reports on website connectivity issues in real-time. According to a Facebook post by Downdetector at around 10 a.m., they have received more than 3 million connectivity reports across the United States since the beginning of the outage.
At 3:35 a.m., AWS made a statement that the issue had been “fully mitigated,” and operations should have been “succeeding normally now.” Nearly seven hours later, Instructure, along with more than 40 other websites are still facing outages reported on Downdetector.

Upon opening Canvas, an error message appears regarding connectivity issues. The error message states that Instructure is working with AWS to find a solution to resume its operations as soon as possible.
Students in the CSUN Reddit channel discussed how the outage has affected their studies.
“I couldn’t even submit any of the assignments that were due at 11:59pm,” one user wrote.
According to AWS, by 3:01 p.m., error rates had been fully recovered across all platforms, as they “worked in parallel to resolve network connectivity issues until the services fully recovered.” As of 6:02 p.m., Instructure stated that all systems are operational and students should be able to access their homework, assignments and classes through Canvas.
