Matadors defeat UC Davis to take first place in Big West
The Matadors hosted the UC Davis Aggies on Sunday night at Matador Soccer Field, winning one-nil.
Records are being set with goalkeeper Riley Liebsack earning her 7th straight shutout, moving into the fourth spot all-time in school history, along with the team setting a new record for consecutive shutouts sitting at seven.
CSUN (7-6-3 overall, 5-0-2 conference) completed the trifecta in a perfect week of soccer and earned three consecutive wins over Big West rivals.
The Matadors currently sit in first with 17 points in the Big West Conference standings, after a hard fought 90 minutes against last place UC Davis (2-11-4 overall, 0-7-1 conference).
With the win, the Matadors continue their impressive run with only a few games left in the season, remaining unbeaten in the last seven matches.
CSUN struck first with the only goal of the game in the 30’ minute. The assist came by forward Ariah Velazquez who sent a right foot cross near the ten-yard box for forward Yasmin Azar.

Azar spoke about the sequence of the play as she was left wide open with no marker, aimed low and away from Aggie goalkeeper Cat Pieper.
“We talked about being open near the [penalty kick] spot and getting those crosses on the ground. I knew where I had to be, and I made sure I was keeping it low,” Azar said.
She said the team’s chemistry is coming together leading into the final stretch of games in the season.
“We are super confident. I think our clean sheets are not a mistake,” Azar said. “We’ve been working hard, and we are having this mentality of defending first and getting our goals in when the opportunity presents itself.”
Leibsack tallied four saves against the Aggies to lead her team to the new program record and recognized her team’s performance after the final whistle.
“Everyone predicted that we would finish second to last place in this conference. We knew of our abilities,” Liebsack said. “We have great belief in our group. It’s a full team effort from top to bottom.”
According to Liebsack, the win was their most challenging one to date. The match comes after a midweek game in Hawai’i. Leibsack said this win proves how strong the Matadors have become as a team.
“It wasn’t the prettiest win, but it was a great win. I’m so proud of everyone,” Leibsack said.
The Matadors will hit the road for the last time this season, traveling north to Harder Stadium to face UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7p.m. A few days later they will visit the Mustangs of Cal Poly at Mustang Memorial Field for a matinee game on Sunday, Oct. 26, at noon. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
